I Wonder

For me, the journey of music discovery took a wonderful and unpredictable turn last weekend at a packed Masonic Temple Theater in Detroit featuring a local star that you may have never heard of.  Sixto Rodriguez, who described himself on stage as an “ordinary legend,” finally captured his deserved super star status – at the age of what he calls a “solid 70.” You don’t know about Rodriguez? If you didn’t see Searching For Sugarman, you missed something special – an Oscar-winning documentary film about a Detroit born musician who tried...

You’ve probably read Lori Lewis’ great weekly column in All Access called “Merge.”  She provides great insights into what’s happening with social and digital media in ways in which everyone in radio can learn something every week. A couple weeks back, her topic was A.J. Clemente, that infamous North Dakota TV anchorman who unwittingly dropped a line of profanity during his first moments on the air.  Of course he was fired, and then made the rounds of every talk and entertainment show imaginable.  I’m sure that many radio stations had...

And The Winner Was…

Now that the Boston Marathon bombing story is ending up in the legal system, it is instructive to look back at the winners and losers in the media and technology race during last week’s big news story. There doesn’t seem to be any question in too many people’s minds that Twitter came out of this whole thing as a key source of information and coverage.  In an environment where everyone is trying to pull off “breaking news” – and many are failing – Twitter consistently led the way. This says...

On a recent MLB broadcast, sports play-by-play legend Vin Scully was reading a liner card about the Dodgers’ Twitter poll where fans were asked to tweet/vote on one of two hashtags. And Scully wondered out loud about what the heck is a hashtag anyway.  You can watch the video below. >EMAIL RECIPIENTS: CLICK HERE TO WATCH VIN SCULLY VIDEO< Deadspin, the popular sports alternative website to the more mainstream ESPN.com, cut him some slack: “Vin Scully doesn’t need this shit.  Probably half the people watching Dodgers games are watching specifically for Scully,...

Today marks the celebration of the debut of baseball pioneer and superstar Jackie Robinson.  The way that Major League Baseball now honors Robinson is right up there with the pink wave that has taken over the world of sports, acknowledging breast cancer and the Susan B. Komen organization.  In every game played today, all players in both leagues will wear the number 42 on their backs in honor of this groundbreaking man. But Jackie Robinson – a marketing event? Of course it is, and a brilliant one at that.  Yes, Robinson’s first day on a...

Social Nielsen?

Social Nielsen?

Lori Lewis often gets the question about whether bursts in social media activity can actually translate to ratings.  Here’s her “take” on new data that’s all about that relationship and what it might mean for radio. – FJ A recent study from Nielsen compiled with SocialGuide reports a “statistically significant relationship” between Twitter activity and television ratings – especially among younger demographics. The research shows that last fall, an 8.5% rise in Twitter activity equated to a 1% jump in ratings among 18-34s.  For older viewers, a higher level of tweeting...

Thanks to NBC News, photos from the street leading up to St. Peter’s Square in the Vatican give us a picture book lesson about how the mobile age has changed people, events, culture, and the world in just a few short years. Here’s a photo going back to 2005, as people crowded the area watching Pope John Paul III’s body being carried into the Basilica. Now fast-forward to a couple of days ago as Pope Francis made his first appearance on the Vatican balcony. As writer Carlo Dellaverson points...

You Give Radio A Bad Name

If you’re a member of a minority, ethnic, or religious group, you’ll probably relate to what I’m going to talk about in this post.  That’s because when bad things happen in the world, you hope that your group, your tribe, or your people aren’t somehow connected to them.  You’re concerned that your “brand” will get a bad name because someone in your group has been associated with something sordid, scandalous, or embarrassing. If you’re in broadcast radio right now, this is how you may be feeling.  It used to be that when you...

Where’s The Business Model? 2

So yesterday we took a look into how radio companies are – or aren’t – thinking about the development of business models for streaming and mobile. Today, we’re going a step backwards into the frightening world of print to uncover whether there’s anything we can learn from the Fourth Estate.  Often the lesson is about what not to do, but a new article posted on the Journalism.org site suggest there’s more hacking going on in the newspaper business than perhaps we think. The article examines a case study released by...

“Always Is A Long Time”

So now we know that the world did not end last month.  And unlike Y2K, companies did not spend any money or human resources preparing for this predicted gloom and doom.  And somehow we made it to another new year, fiscal cliff and all. But if you were Newsweek, it was the end of the world as they knew it.  Their last print issue was published last month with an ominous cover announcing the demise of the hard edition.  It was impossible to miss the hashtag at the bottom,...
