Best of jacoBLOG – What’s On Your Mind(set)

Oh boy – this post stirred things up big time when it ran last summer.  We’re doing Best of JacoBLOG as we wrap up 2012, and this one was one of the most-read and talked-about posts.  The good news is that the authors of The Beloit List actually changed their original comments about radio, and maybe this post had a little something to do with it.  So check it out, but if you’re in radio, better watch that blood pressure. - FJ Every year Beloit College (Beloit, WI) puts together...

Best of jacoBLOG – Working For The Weekend

We continue our series of Best of JacoBLOG with a post that resonated in radio circles – public and commercial.  It’s a lesson in consistency, persistence, and quality.  And our 6-pack of lessons was very well-read.  See what you think. – FJ PPM has taught us a lot about how people actually listen to the radio.  And the importance and role of weekend programming is one of those important lessons.  Put together great weekends and it makes a big difference in your overall rank. On that topic, just before the...

Audience Estimates

The “December Surprise” – Nielsen purchasing Arbitron – is undoubtedly a game-changer for the media business.  And many in radio are hopeful that the sale means good things for the industry. While the devil is always in the details, this move would seem to be a big crossroads moment for radio, media, and measurement – at a time when innovation is necessary. We’re at that point – more and more consumers are turning to multiple screens, digital media, and a bevy of options.  And it will all intensify after the...

The Rest of the Story

Another day and another very cool Silicon Alley Insider chart.  The one below shows the insane growth of the iPad, especially compared to Apple’s previous devices – the iPod and iPhone – both game changers in their own ways.  As you look at each gadget’s trajectory after the 10 quarters following their respective releases, iPad’s meteoric rise is even more impressive. The chart is part of KPMG’s Mary Meeker’s latest presentation about all things web.  She’s one of the best analysts out there. But as I looked deeper at each...

Take This Job…

You just can’t make this stuff up. MyPlan.com has quantified it. Nearly 14,000 respondents weighed in about job satisfaction with their current occupations.  Of 300 different occupations, “program director” (radio or TV) comes in at… …299! I hate to leave you with this news going into a weekend, but c’mon! Only mail clerks and mail machine operators (excluding the U.S.P.S.) come in at a lower happiness rate. In the same vicinity as PDs are municipal clerks, food preparation and serving workers (not fast food), maids and housekeepers, and hotel desk...

M as in….

Every business has its own lexicon.  Radio is no different. In the past decade or so, new and different words and expressions have been heard with great frequency. Meter, cluster, streaming, voicetracking, cell phone only, value added, NTR, and spoken word are all part of our new vocabulary. At the same time, other terms and phrases have become less prevalent, and in some cases, virtually extinct. These include smooth jazz, callout, programming stunt, diary, landline, phone scam, and… … marketing. There was a time in radio when its best...

Got Live!

Some recently released stats about the meteoric rise of DVRs say a lot about where television viewing is headed. It turns out that more and more, consumers are watching TV shows when and where they want – not necessarily when they’re broadcast live.  You know this if you own a TiVo or more likely have a DVR as part of your cable or satellite television subscription. Once you get beyond sports and big shows like the Academy Awards, a growing percentage of television consumption is not happening in real...

Sweet Dreams

When jacAPPS celebrated its fourth anniversary last month, it brought back memories of conversations I was having around that time with clients, friends, and family members when they’d see me whip out my iPhone (and before that, my Treo) at a restaurant or meeting. Some would ask me, “Why would you even want email on your phone?  Do you really need that?”  “Or do you honestly have to be checking sports scores all the time on that iPhone?” And here we are, just a few years later, and there’s even...

Where It’s At

“Brands will be more successful in this space by knowing who their target audience is, what content will be relevant for them and which platform will be most effective in reaching this audience.” Werner Brell, Red Bull And with that quote, the managing director of Red Bull Media House lobbed a content grenade at every brand and media outlet trying to effectively move their best work in the direction of their rapidly moving audiences. Speaking at a Fast Company Co.CREATE panel, Brell issued an important challenge that goes beyond the...
