Today marks the eight anniversary of JacoBLOG.  When Tim Davis first convinced me to take on this endeavor in 2005, we were in the process of conducting our first Techsurvey, YouTube was just coming online, Howard Stern was still on terrestrial radio, and there were no apps. Obviously, a great deal has changed during the past eight years, but one thing that has been consistent is just how rewarding it has been to hang out in this digital cockpit and write something new every weekday.  I originally asked Tim how...

Best Of jacoBLOG – Oh, Denise

We’re wrapping up our “Best of” series today before we get started with fresh content for the new year.  As we enter a a brave new year, here is a post about a possible radio tomorrow that generated a great deal of traffic, comments, and buzz .  It’s about the future – or maybe it’s a statement about the past.  But no matter how you look at it, this post addresses the question of whether tomorrow’s radio will remain live, local, and connected OR whether personality radio will become something altogether different. ...

Best Of jacoBLOG – No Sale 2

As we have done the past couple years, our final posts to wrap-up 2011 are our version of a “Best of.”  But this year, we’re not making these calls based on OUR opinion of what resonated with you – instead, we’ve turned to the metrics.  The blogs that wrap-up the year generated the most traffic and comments. Pandora has been a big story throughout 2011, and I’m proud that our company has been in a leadership role when it comes to providing research and perspective on the challenges –...

Best Of jacoBLOG – Big Frank Left You Off The Buy

As we have done the past couple years, our final posts to wrap-up 2011 are our version of a “Best of.”  But this year, we’re not making these calls based on OUR opinion of what resonated with you – instead, we’ve turned to the metrics.  The blogs that wrap-up the year generated the most traffic and comments. This post really got the buzz going about the role of Groupon, coupons, and radio’s local sales efforts.  Since it was written, Groupon has gone public, of course, and radio continues to...

So Suh Me

So Suh Me

These days, it is often about reputation – how to build and maintain a good one.  And also how to turn around a reputation that has been sullied. So much about what we read in the news these days about personalities tends to be reputation-based, whether you’re looking at Jerry Sandusky or Herman Cain.  Yes, there are often legal implications that impact reputation, but oftentimes, it is the celebrity himself that has repair work to do. Case in point: Detroit Lions defensive sensation, Ndamukong Suh, whose reputation for being...

Ira’s Irate

Ira’s Irate

A recent Nieman Journalism blog by Andrew Phelps leads with a glaring headline: Ira Glass: ‘Who cares if radio survives?  Something else will happen.’ Pretty inflammatory stuff, especially coming from a thoughtful, insightful radio professional and content creator. If you don’t know Ira Glass, you should.  He’s the host and main force behind the wildly popular This American Life, a unique mash-up of documentary, performance art, and storytelling that is heard weekly on public radio stations everywhere.  It is often at or near the top in weekly podcasts on iTunes, a...

Partnerships

In a post that ran here last week (“Actives”), guest-blogger Mike Anthony complimented Clear Channel’s Bob Pittman on his bold partnerships.  And just a day before his post ran, Clear Channel announced an alliance with LivingSocial. This partnership speaks volumes about where radio is heading, as well as a statement about the state of the eCoupon model.  That’s because on the same day, The New York Times ran an article about Groupon’s current travails.  It spoke of accounting and disclosure issues that are “raising questions about the company’s credibility.”...

Oh, Denise

Denise_AI DJ

This crazy controversy about Denise, the artificial intelligence “DJ” being tested at KROV radio just took an interesting turn. Alan Cross took on Denise in a recent blog.  A couple of days later, we opined in this space about how seminal personalities can have great impact on local communities.  WCSX’s Steve Kostan, recently inducted in the Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame, was our poster boy for personality radio done right. Then last Friday, Denise’s Dr. Frankenstein, Dominique Garcia, responded to Alan’s blog.  Garcia took a more defensive approach, and...

Meet The New Blog

Hi There! Welcome to the newest incarnation of the jacoBLOG.  We’ve spent a good amount of time taking your feedback, watching usage patterns and simply observing the trends we report on here, and have given the blog a major facelift. We think this new platform will make it easier to continue our dialogue as well as increase the ease of sharing, and frankly just more fun and pleasant to read.  You’ll notice we’re also tracking our conversations in Twitter and on Facebook as well.  There’s also a blogroll that...

No Sale 2

No Sale 2

In yesterday’s post, we talked about the growing pains that Pandora is enduring as they successfully build audience and platforms, while lagging behind in selling mobile advertising. While they may be growing listeners, they’re now measured by Wall Street, and those of us in radio know all about those pressures. Generating streaming income is challenging, period, even with the aura of newness and coolness Pandora exudes.  Many in broadcast radio feel that pain, too.  Most radio companies have also been hard-pressed to crank streaming revenue, often just selling dirt...
